Venezuela Twin Quakes Rescue Effort
Rescue teams in Venezuela are in a desperate race against time following twin earthquakes that have devastated the nation. The death toll has surpassed 1,400, with nearly 69,000 people reported missing and 3,200 injured. The worst-hit coastal state of La Guaira is now under military control, with roads restricted to emergency vehicles to facilitate rescue operations.
Over 1,600 rescuers, including military personnel and volunteers, are using specialized listening devices, canine units, and heavy machinery to search for survivors. Local residents are also digging through rubble with their bare hands and shovels, hoping to find loved ones. With more than 90 hours having passed since the quakes, the critical 48-to-72-hour rescue window has closed, though hope remains for those with access to food and water.
Pope Francis has expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people and praised the rescue workers’ efforts.
