Slovak PM Fico Vows to Keep Dialogue with Putin Open
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has declared he will not miss any opportunity to engage in dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that Slovakia should pursue friendly and mutually beneficial relations with all nations that reciprocate accordingly.
In a video address on Facebook, Fico reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining communication with Moscow while also staying in contact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, despite holding “diametrically opposed views on many issues.” He stressed that Slovakia remains a peaceful nation dedicated to upholding international law.
The prime minister further condemned what he called the European Union’s “double standards,” criticizing the bloc’s approach to foreign policy. Fico’s remarks underscore Slovakia’s balancing act between its EU obligations and its desire for pragmatic engagement with Russia, a stance that has drawn attention amid ongoing tensions in the region. He insisted that dialogue remains essential for Slovakia’s national interests.
