US-Iran Talks in Switzerland: Lebanon Ceasefire Takes Center Stage
High-level US-Iran technical talks are set for Sunday in Burgenstock, Switzerland, with Lebanon’s ceasefire topping the agenda. Tehran insists the recent bilateral MoU mandates a halt to Israeli attacks on Lebanon, which have intensified, and will press Washington to enforce this. Iran views continued strikes as a direct violation of the agreement.
The Iranian delegation is led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The US team is headed by Vice President JD Vance, accompanied by envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Mediators from Pakistan (PM Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir) and Qatar’s PM also attend, following IRGC threats to close the Strait of Hormuz over the violations.
While Vance aims to address both the nuclear issue and Lebanon, Iran’s spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated their focus is securing clear US commitments to implement the MoU’s terms regarding the war. The talks occur amidst heightened regional tensions.
