Child Casualties Surge in Sudan Conflict
A new UNICEF report reveals that over 300 children have been killed or injured in Sudan within the last six months, primarily due to drone strikes. The UN children’s agency presented these findings to the Human Rights Council, describing Sudanese children as trapped in a “relentless cycle of violence, displacement and deprivation.”
The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, ongoing since April 2023, has intensified in Kordofan, Darfur, and Blue Nile states, with drone warfare now causing 60% of casualties. Civilian infrastructure, including schools and water stations, has been systematically targeted, endangering over 500,000 people.
The UN has urgently called on all parties to protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian access. The conflict’s broader toll is staggering: at least 59,000 dead, 13 million displaced, widespread famine, and over 30 million in need of aid. The Human Rights Council has condemned the escalating violence and external interference in the war.
