Iran’s Critical Water Crisis
According to Iranian water authorities, the nation is facing a severe water crisis, with 67% of its dam capacity empty due to a catastrophic failure of autumn rains. Since the water year began in late September, rainfall has plummeted by 83% compared to last year, leaving 20 provinces without any precipitation.
The situation is particularly critical for the capital, Tehran. Its main reservoirs are dangerously depleted; the Amir Kabir Dam is at only 8% of its capacity, with just weeks of extractable water supply remaining. Officials have issued stark warnings that the city of nine million could face widespread water rationing imminently if rains do not arrive.
The crisis is compounded by a 15% water loss through aging infrastructure. Authorities are urgently calling for public cooperation in conservation and the implementation of water-saving technologies as the only short-term solution to manage the dwindling reserves.
