Third in Five Years: Peru’s Congress Votes to Remove President Boluarte
Peru’s Congress has voted to impeach President Dina Boluarte, citing a national security crisis and “moral incapacity.”
Lawmakers accused her of failing to quell a rampant crime wave, a persistent issue that previously led to the ouster of her interior minister and head of government. Boluarte, who did not attend the session, was subsequently replaced by Congress President Jose Jeri, who was sworn in as the new leader.
The former president now faces multiple criminal investigations, including for bribery and her alleged role in protesters’ deaths. This makes Boluarte the third Peruvian president to be impeached in the last five years, underscoring the nation’s profound political instability.
