Ebola Crisis: Over 90 Dead as Outbreak Declared International Emergency
The World Health Organization has declared the Democratic Republic of Congo’s latest Ebola outbreak an international health emergency, with over 90 suspected deaths and hundreds of infections. The highly contagious Bundibugyo strain—currently without a vaccine or specific treatment—has spread beyond the northeastern epicenter. Confirmed cases in Goma, a city under armed group control, and one death in Uganda raise regional alarm.
At Kyeshero Hospital, strict measures like handwashing and temperature checks are in place. However, medical director Fabrice Bichenge warns of critical shortages in infection control supplies. Health Minister Samuel-Roger Kamba reports 91 suspected deaths and 350 cases, mostly among women and people aged 20–39. Some communities initially attributed the illness to witchcraft, delaying hospital care. With dense populations, cross-border mining activity, and insecurity, experts fear rapid escalation across East Africa.
