Fahmy Appointed as Next Arab League Chief
Arab foreign ministers have unanimously selected former Egyptian foreign minister Nabil Fahmy as the next Secretary General of the Arab League. The 75-year-old diplomat will assume the five-year term in July, following official approval at the upcoming summit in Saudi Arabia. Fahmy, who served as Egypt’s foreign minister from 2013 to 2014, becomes the eighth Egyptian to lead the Cairo-based bloc.
In a statement, he described the role as a “great responsibility,” citing violations of international law and prolonged occupation of Arab lands without explicitly naming Iran or Israel. Founded in 1945, the 22-member league serves as a key political forum for Arab nations.
