Zambia Officially Declares End to Cholera Outbreak
Zambia has declared an end to its latest cholera outbreak after five weeks without new cases.
The Health Ministry reported 496 cases and 9 deaths in the final wave, with the last case detected in May 2025 in Kabwe District. While this marks progress, officials warn that risks remain, particularly due to prolonged drought, which threatens clean water access and hygiene.
Health Minister Elijah Muchima stressed ongoing vigilance, with prevention efforts including stockpiling medical supplies, enhancing surveillance, and promoting public awareness.
Despite this success, sustained action is critical as climate change exacerbates water insecurity, keeping cholera a persistent threat. Zambia remains committed to long-term prevention.
