Egypt has warned of possible military intervention if Ethiopia continues to fill the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) without a binding agreement. The dam, built on the Nile River, has caused tensions between the two countries, as Egypt fears it will reduce its water supply, threatening its agriculture and economy.

Despite years of negotiations, no deal has been reached. Egypt insists on guarantees for its historic water rights, while Ethiopia argues the dam is crucial for its development. Sudan, another downstream country, has also expressed concerns.

Egyptian officials have stated that “all options are open,” including military action, if Ethiopia proceeds unilaterally. The situation raises fears of conflict in the region, with international mediators urging diplomacy.

The Nile is a lifeline for Egypt, providing over 90% of its water. Any disruption could have severe consequences. The world watches closely as tensions escalate over this critical resource.
