Israeli soldiers have admitted to Haaretz that they received orders to fire on unarmed Palestinians attempting to reach aid distribution sites in Gaza, resulting in over 550 deaths in the past month. Soldiers and officers confirmed that commanders instructed troops to shoot at crowds to disperse them, despite the civilians posing no threat. The IDF has used drones, tanks, and sniper fire against aid seekers, with one soldier describing the scenes as a “killing field.” Medical workers report treating dozens of wounded daily, calling the aid sites “death traps.”

Since Israel resumed limited aid distribution in late May, at least 549 Palestinians have been killed and 4,000 injured near these locations. Israeli forces have opened fire on civilians at least 19 times, with reports of allied militias, including an ISIS-linked group, also attacking aid seekers. An airstrike on Thursday killed 18 Palestinians retrieving aid.

Israel had previously cut off all aid in March, breaking a ceasefire with Hamas. The recent limited distributions, managed by the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), have been insufficient, leading to starvation-related deaths, including infants dying from formula shortages. The U.S. approved $30 million for GHF, whose leader is a Netanyahu ally, while doctors blame Israeli restrictions for the humanitarian crisis.
