In a historic upset, Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and Muslim, won the Democratic primary for New York City mayor on June 24, 2025, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Mamdani, born in Uganda and a U.S. citizen since 2018, campaigned on affordability, promising rent freezes, free buses, universal childcare, and city-owned grocery stores. His progressive platform, backed by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, resonated with young and Muslim voters, despite criticism over his Israel-Gaza stance and accusations of being too left-wing.

Mamdani’s victory, pending ranked-choice voting results, positions him as the likely Democratic nominee for the November 2025 general election. If elected, he would be NYC’s first Muslim, Asian, and millennial mayor. Cuomo may run as an independent, but Mamdani is favored in the heavily Democratic city.
