Experts say Hanoi’s inclusion into bloc aids closer South-South cooperation

Vietnam’s inclusion as a BRICS partner country strengthens the bloc’s global influence and fosters Global South cooperation, experts say. Officially admitted on Friday, Vietnam’s move reflects its commitment to multilateralism and neutrality in a divided world, avoiding great-power rivalries, said political scientist Vu Lam. The Brazilian government praised Vietnam’s role in promoting inclusive global governance and South-South cooperation.

BRICS, now with 11 members and multiple partners, expanded in 2024–2025, including ASEAN nations like Indonesia (full member) and Thailand/Malaysia (partners). Vietnam’s entry boosts ASEAN’s visibility in BRICS, signaling a shift toward multipolar leadership and economic diversification, said analyst Anna Malindog-Uy. It also offers Vietnam access to new markets, investments, and tech cooperation.

Experts note Vietnam’s manufacturing expertise aligns with BRICS’ goals of supply-chain resilience, while geopolitical uncertainties may drive more ASEAN states toward BRICS as a counterbalance to Western pressures. However, the long-term impact depends on economic, political, and regional dynamics.
