Protests are Growing in Tripoli
Forces loyal to Libya’s Government of National Unity (GNU) fired on protesters demanding Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh’s resignation near his Tripoli headquarters, Al Marsad reported. Demonstrations have grown, with thousands rallying in the city center amid rising unrest.
Tensions escalated after clashes erupted Monday night between the GNU-aligned 444th Infantry Brigade and the Stability Support Apparatus, following the assassination of the Apparatus’ leader, Abdelghani al-Kikli, at the brigade’s headquarters. Fighting lasted hours before the GNU Defense Ministry declared the operation over.
In response, Dbeibeh ordered a security reshuffle, including disbanding the Deterrence Forces led by Abdul Raouf Kara. This triggered fresh clashes between Kara’s fighters and the 444th Brigade, further destabilizing Tripoli. The protests and violence reflect deepening divisions within Libya’s fragile unity government as public frustration mounts over political and economic crises.
