Ecuador’s National Electoral Council Declares Daniel Noboa Winner of Presidential Election

Ecuador’s National Electoral Council (CNE) has officially declared Daniel Noboa the winner of the 2023 presidential runoff election, held on October 15. The 35-year-old businessman and former legislator secured victory with approximately 52% of the vote, defeating leftist candidate Luisa González. Noboa, representing the National Democratic Action alliance, will complete the remaining 18 months of outgoing President Guillermo Lasso’s term, which was cut short after he dissolved the National Assembly amid impeachment proceedings.

Noboa’s win marks a shift in Ecuador’s political landscape, as he becomes the country’s youngest president. His campaign focused on economic revitalization, job creation, and tackling rising crime—a major concern for voters amid escalating drug-related violence. However, his limited political experience and fragmented legislature pose governance challenges.

International observers, including the OAS, deemed the election fair. President-elect Noboa has pledged unity and urgent reforms, but with a short term and deep polarization, his ability to enact lasting change remains uncertain. His inauguration is set for December 2023, where he will face immediate tests in stabilizing Ecuador’s economy and security crisis.
