US military aid to Taiwan heavily criticized

China has expressed serious concerns over the United States’ decision to extend military aid to Taiwan, including $870 million in security-related exemptions, as part of a $5.3 billion foreign aid package.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stated that this move violates the one-China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiques, infringing on China’s sovereignty and security interests. He warned that such actions send a dangerous signal to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces, which China firmly opposes.

Lin emphasized that Taiwan is a core interest of China and a red line in China-US relations, vowing to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Meanwhile, Zhu Fenglian, spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, criticized Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities for considering arms purchases worth $7 billion to $10 billion from the US, calling it a futile attempt to secure “Taiwan independence.”

She accused the DPP of squandering resources to curry favor with Washington, turning Taiwan into a “powder keg” and harming its peace and stability. Zhu dismissed the DPP’s plan to increase defense spending to 3% of Taiwan’s GDP, stating it would only exacerbate tensions.

She reiterated that “Taiwan independence” is incompatible with peace and that the Chinese people and the People’s Liberation Army will never tolerate any attempts to split Taiwan from China.
