Russia and Gulf States Explore Joint Development of Fifth‑Generation Fighter Jets
Russia has opened negotiations with several Middle Eastern countries on jointly developing and manufacturing fifth‑generation fighter aircraft, according to the Federal Service for Military‑Technical Cooperation (FSMTC). Speaking at the World Defense Show 2026 in Riyadh, the agency confirmed that discussions cover both advanced warplanes and next‑generation weapons systems. FSMTC emphasized that these are long‑term, technologically complex projects requiring extensive planning and coordination.
Current talks focus on defining the scope of cooperation, dividing industrial responsibilities, and assessing each side’s competencies. Because these parameters are still under review, Russian officials say it is premature to set a timeline for launching any joint production program. The initiative reflects Russia’s broader effort to deepen defense‑industrial ties with Gulf partners amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
