South Africa Protest Against US Actions in Venezuela
Hundreds of demonstrators marched to the US consulate in Johannesburg to condemn Washington’s intervention in Venezuela and the capture of former president Nicolás Maduro. The protest, organised by the South African Communist Party and major trade unions, included a memorandum denouncing what participants described as an illegal US military invasion and demanding the release of Maduro and Celia Flores.
Union leaders framed the march as a defence of international law and Venezuela’s sovereignty, arguing that global resources like oil should advance peace rather than conflict. Senior ANC officials, including Nomvula Mokonyane, praised the mobilisation as a united stand against imperialist aggression. The demonstration came amid increasingly strained relations between Pretoria and Washington and followed a similar protest outside the US Embassy in Pretoria earlier this month.
