Hungary Secures Waiver on Sanctions!
During a successful meeting at the White House between Hungary’s PM Viktor Orban and President Donald Trump, Orban secured a waiver for Hungary from sanctions on Russian oil and natural gas.
Following this agreement, Hungary announced to have secured an “indefinite” exemption, while the White House insists it is only for one year. Following a meeting between Prime Minister Viktor Orban and President Donald Trump, Hungarian officials stated they had obtained a complete and indefinite reprieve from sanctions affecting Russian oil and gas imports, which are crucial for Hungary’s economy.
However, a White House official repeatedly clarified to Reuters that the exemption is specifically for a one-year period. The official also noted that Hungary had committed to diversifying its energy sources by purchasing US liquefied natural gas. The disagreement highlights Hungary’s heavy reliance on Russian energy and Orban’s delicate balancing act between Moscow and Washington.
In any case, this is a huge win for Orban!
