Katz: US Has Not Requested Israeli Withdrawal from Lebanon
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated Wednesday that the US has not demanded an Israeli troop withdrawal from southern Lebanon, calling this absence of pressure a “diplomatic achievement.” This stance directly contradicts the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding, which Iran maintains requires an end to Israel’s military presence.
Katz affirmed Israel’s intent to maintain its occupation regardless of any future American requests, declaring, “Soldiers in, residents out.” He justified this position by citing security concerns and the destruction of local infrastructure. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed this commitment, vowing to retain a “security zone” as long as he remains in office.
While US leadership has criticized some Israeli actions, there is no indication of pressure to withdraw or cut military aid. Meanwhile, ongoing Israeli strikes killed three people on Wednesday, and Lebanese officials insist on a full end to the occupation. Current negotiations reportedly involve a US-backed proposal for a limited handover, allowing Israel to keep a buffer zone.
