Congo is confronting a new Ebola outbreak, centered in the Bulape Health Zone of Kasai Province. As of September 21, 2025, health officials have reported 57 cases (47 confirmed, 10 probable) and 35 deaths, resulting in a high case fatality ratio of 61.4%.

The outbreak affects a broad age range, with children aged 0-9 representing 23% of cases, and females accounting for 61% of infections.

Response efforts are underway but face significant challenges. Only 400 initial vaccine doses have been deployed, with an approved shipment of 45,000 more expected. The World Health Organization cites limited access and funding as major obstacles.

This is the DRC’s 16th Ebola outbreak since 1976, further complicating a national crisis already strained by ongoing conflict and a weakened healthcare system.
