Germany bans AfD members from civil service
The ban on AfD members from civil service roles in Rhineland-Palatinate stems from a new policy requiring applicants to declare non-membership in extremist groups, a move backed by the state’s classification of AfD as extremist, despite its second-place finish in the 2025 federal elections, highlighting a growing tension between democratic governance and political exclusion.
This policy builds on the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution’s 2023 designation of AfD as a “confirmed right-wing extremist endeavour,” a classification paused due to legal challenges, yet regional authorities like Rhineland-Palatinate have independently enforced similar restrictions, reflecting a fragmented approach to managing political extremism.
Historical context reveals Germany’s unique civil service framework, where Beamte (public servants) face lifetime appointments and strict loyalty oaths under Article 33(5) of the Basic Law, a system designed post-WWII to prevent ideological infiltration.
Nevertheless, no matter how you wrap it, this is an extreme attemp to manipulate people’s votes.
