Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed Moscow’s willingness to support Burkina Faso in maintaining national security and addressing socio-economic challenges. The announcement followed a meeting between Lavrov and his Burkinabè counterpart, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore, during which both sides discussed strengthening bilateral ties.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Moscow is prepared to provide “multifaceted assistance” to Ouagadougou, including in security matters, amid ongoing instability in the Sahel region. The ministers also explored cooperation in trade, economic development, and cultural exchanges.

Lavrov and Traore emphasized their commitment to deepening political dialogue and enhancing coordination on foreign policy issues. This aligns with Burkina Faso’s recent shift toward strengthening partnerships with non-Western nations, including Russia, following strained relations with former colonial power France.

The meeting underscores Russia’s growing influence in Africa, where it has expanded military, economic, and diplomatic engagements, particularly in nations facing security crises. Burkina Faso, grappling with jihadist insurgencies, may see increased Russian support in counterterrorism efforts and development projects.
