China deepening ties with Africa
China’s deepening ties with Africa are exemplified by its commitment to improving healthcare on the continent, as seen at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul, The Gambia. Here, Chinese medical teams have been providing critical services, including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) techniques like acupuncture, which have brought relief to countless patients. One such patient, a 63-year-old woman suffering from severe knee pain, experienced significant improvement after her first acupuncture session, allowing her to walk more comfortably. Her son-in-law, Ebrima Bah, expressed gratitude for the treatment, which also helped his 18-year-old son recover from chronic back pain.
The 22nd batch of the Chinese medical team, led by Dr. Cai Guiyang, has been instrumental in transforming healthcare delivery in The Gambia. Since their arrival in July 2023, the team has treated over 2,000 patients, performed more than 200 surgeries, and conducted numerous training sessions for local healthcare workers. Their efforts have introduced advanced techniques like laparoscopic surgery, previously unavailable in the country, and strengthened the hospital’s capacity to provide high-quality care.

Beyond clinical work, the team has organized outreach programs, offering free medical services to over 700 people in both urban and rural areas. Additionally, a partnership between Edward Francis Small and China’s Shengjing Hospital has facilitated academic exchanges and remote training, further enhancing local expertise. As Dr. Cai emphasized, the goal is not only to treat patients but also to build a sustainable healthcare system through training, equipment donations, and knowledge sharing. This collaboration underscores China’s role as a key partner in Africa’s development, fostering mutual growth and goodwill.
