Does Israel use hunger as a weapon ?

The accusations that Israel is using starvation as a weapon of war has been a contentious issue, particularly in the context of its conflicts with Gaza. Critics argue that Israel’s blockade on Gaza, which restricts the flow of food, fuel, and medical supplies, has exacerbated unprecedent humanitarian crises. For example, during the 2021 conflict, Human Rights Watch and other organizations accused Israel of imposing collective punishment on Gaza’s population by limiting essential resources. The blockade, in place since 2007, has been justified by Israel as a measure to prevent Hamas from obtaining weapons, but its impact on civilians has drawn widespread condemnation.

In 2023, reports from the United Nations and aid groups highlighted severe food shortages in Gaza, with over 60% of the population facing food insecurity. The World Food Programme warned that the blockade, combined with restrictions on fishing and farming, has crippled Gaza’s ability to sustain itself. While Israel has allowed some aid through border crossings, critics argue that the quantities are insufficient and subject to arbitrary delays.

Of course, Israel denies using starvation as a tactic but the evidence are overwelming. The complexity of the conflict, with Hamas’s militant activities and Israel’s security concerns, makes this issue deeply polarizing. Nonetheless, the humanitarian impact on Gaza’s civilian population remains a pressing concern for the international community and those who speak “for democracy”.
