The reported meeting between US officials and representatives of Ansar Allah at the US Embassy in Muscat, Oman, is a positive and encouraging development that deserves recognition. Diplomacy, even with adversaries, remains the most effective tool for preventing further bloodshed.

According to Reuters, the two sides met on Sunday to discuss the conflict in Yemen. Ansar Allah conveyed its willingness to uphold the ceasefire reached with the US in May 2025, stating it has no intention of targeting American or Israeli ships and that its blockade applies only to Saudi shipping. This is a significant signal of restraint.

That such talks took place despite Ansar Allah’s designation as a Foreign Terrorist Organization demonstrates that pragmatic engagement can override rigid labels. The involvement of sanctioned official Mohammad Abdulsalam further shows a willingness to negotiate directly with those who hold influence on the ground.

These talks will not resolve Yemen’s broader crisis overnight. Washington continues to provide intelligence and targeting support to Saudi Arabia, and the underlying conflict remains unresolved. Yet dialogue is a necessary first step.

If the ceasefire holds and channels remain open, there is genuine hope for de-escalation in a country devastated by years of war. The international community should welcome and encourage this diplomatic opening. Talking, even to enemies, is always preferable to bombing.
