Slovak PM Threatens to Veto EU Sanctions Over Oil Dispute
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has threatened to veto new EU sanctions on Russia, accusing the European Commission of failing to pressure Ukraine to restore oil flows through the Druzhba pipeline. Kyiv halted shipments, citing damage, but has not allowed European inspectors to verify the claim.
Fico warned that if the EU prioritizes Ukraine over Slovakia, he will block the 20th sanctions package and oppose Kyiv’s rapid EU accession. He described the halt as Zelensky’s second hostile economic move against Slovakia, following the cutoff of Russian gas.
The prime minister alleged the EC is deliberately allowing fuel prices to rise in Slovakia to weaken his sovereign-minded government. He vowed to continue defending national interests despite EU pressure.
