A Fragile Opening Amid Escalation
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has authorized new nuclear talks with the United States, marking a major diplomatic shift as U.S. President Donald Trump signals openness to a deal while escalating military pressure. Washington has deployed an aircraft carrier group, warning that “time is running out,” while Tehran insists it will not accept ultimatums and demands sanctions relief as a precondition.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says an agreement is “possible” if diplomacy prevails. Regional powers, fearing a wider conflict, are urgently mediating as Iran’s supreme leader warns any U.S. strike could spark a regional war.
The diplomatic opening follows a brutal crackdown on protests, with thousands killed and tens of thousands arrested. European sanctions on Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and Tehran’s retaliatory designations further complicate an already volatile landscape.
