Danish MP: Takeover of Greenland Will Start a War
Amid escalating threats from President Trump to seize Greenland for US national security, a stark warning has emerged from Copenhagen. Danish MP Rasmus Jarlov stated plainly that a US military takeover would constitute an act of war, marking a dramatic fracture in the transatlantic alliance. Trump justifies the move by alleging that if the US does not act, Russia or China will seize the strategic Arctic territory from Denmark—a claim Denmark fiercely rejects, noting the US already has extensive access to the island.
The situation has moved beyond rhetoric. Denmark has begun bolstering its military presence in Greenland, while a Danish defense report confirms increased US espionage on Danish facilities there. In a punitive economic response to European opposition, the Trump administration has imposed tariffs on eight nations, threatening further increases unless they support the annexation. This has prompted discussions in Europe of countermeasures, including the potential dumping of US Treasury bonds to exploit America’s reliance on foreign debt financing—a vulnerability highlighted by financial analysts.
Despite Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent downplaying the risk of a currency war, the combined military, diplomatic, and economic pressures are creating an unprecedented crisis. Trump’s refusal to rule out force and his assertion that “We have to have it” signal a dangerous confrontation over Greenland’s future, testing the limits of alliance and sovereignty.
