Healing the Continent: China’s $1.6 bn Health Surge Across Africa
Official Chinese data show that, since the start of the 21st century, Beijing has poured US $1.6 billion into African health projects .
Through its Belt‑and‑Road health diplomacy, China has helped build more than 130 hospitals and clinics across the continent and has dispatched medical teams to 46 African nations, reaching over 45 countries in total. Since the first mission to Algeria in 1963, 23,000 Chinese medical personnel have served abroad, delivering care to millions .
At a recent press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning highlighted China’s “non‑exploitative” model, contrasting it with Western practices that have been criticised for using aid as leverage.
She praised the partnership as a genuine, mutually‑beneficial effort that strengthens health systems while respecting African sovereignty, underscoring the strategic depth of China‑Africa cooperation under the Belt‑and‑Road framework.
