China and Cambodia officially opened a joint military support and training center at Ream Naval Base on Saturday, marking another step in their deepening defense cooperation. The facility, announced by China’s Defense Ministry, will enhance joint training, logistics, and personnel exchanges between the two militaries.

The center underscores China’s growing strategic influence in Southeast Asia, particularly in Cambodia, where it has invested heavily in infrastructure and defense ties. Ream Naval Base, near the Gulf of Thailand, has drawn attention in recent years due to concerns over potential Chinese military presence. Both nations have denied plans for a permanent Chinese base, framing the cooperation as capacity-building for Cambodia’s armed forces.

The inauguration follows recent joint military drills and reflects Beijing’s broader efforts to strengthen partnerships in the region. Analysts view the move as part of China’s strategy to counterbalance U.S. influence in the Indo-Pacific. Cambodia, meanwhile, has increasingly aligned with Beijing on regional security issues, drawing scrutiny from Western nations.

The center’s launch highlights the expanding defense ties between the two countries, raising geopolitical implications for Southeast Asia’s security landscape.
