Trump Pauses Hormuz Operation as US-Iran Talks Advance
President Donald Trump has halted the US military’s “Project Freedom” operation aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, citing “great progress” toward a final agreement with Iran. The pause, described as temporary, will test whether a comprehensive deal can be reached with Tehran.
“The operation will be paused for a short period,” Trump stated, expressing optimism about ongoing negotiations.
However, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian struck a defiant tone, accusing Washington of reviving a “policy of maximum pressure.” He insisted that Iran will never submit to unilateral US demands, calling such expectations “impossible” to meet.
The conflicting statements highlight the fragile nature of the talks. While Trump projects confidence in a breakthrough, Tehran remains deeply skeptical of American intentions. The strategic waterway, through which roughly 20% of global oil passes, has been a flashpoint for months. Any final agreement would have major implications for global energy markets and regional stability.
