Destruction in South Lebanon Pushes Locals Toward Hezbollah
As Israel continues its military campaign in southern Lebanon—mirroring tactics used in Gaza—local residents are increasingly turning to Hezbollah for protection. Despite U.S. and Israeli officials blaming Hezbollah for the violence, early resentment toward the group is fading. With Israeli bulldozers demolishing homes and villages, and IDF commanders admitting to a policy of destroying Shi’ite villages, civilians feel they have no other defender.
The Lebanese government’s ceasefire talks have failed to stop daily attacks, making Hezbollah’s claim that no real ceasefire exists ring true. Defense Minister Israel Katz recently compared Israel’s buffer-zone strategy to governing Gaza. As strikes target paramedics and civilian homes, displacement becomes constant. Rather than turning against Hezbollah, desperate locals see the group as their only remaining shield. The destruction, once blamed on resistance factions, now drives the population further into Hezbollah’s orbit.
