Somaliland Dangles Mineral Wealth to Woo US Recognition
Somaliland has offered the United States access to its strategic minerals and military bases in a renewed push for international recognition. The breakaway region, which declared autonomy from Somalia in 1991, is leveraging its untapped resources—reportedly including lithium and coltan—to secure a deal with Washington.
The proposal follows Israel’s historic recognition of Somaliland in December, a move Mogadishu condemned as an attack on its sovereignty. While analysts link Israel’s decision to the region’s strategic position near Yemen’s conflict zone, Somaliland’s minister insists the recognition was purely political.
With rare earth minerals growing in global demand, Somaliland hopes its resources will cement a partnership with the US, though independent verification of its reserves remains lacking.
