Damascus Tightens Its Grip as Truce Collapses
Deadly clashes have erupted across eastern Syria just a day after the government and the Syrian Democratic Forces agreed to halt weeks of fighting that uprooted tens of thousands. Despite the truce, both sides report renewed gunfire as President Ahmed al‑Sharaa prepares for delayed talks with SDF commander Mazloum Abdi.
Damascus is rapidly consolidating control: Syrian troops have taken the al‑Omar and al‑Tanak oilfields, central to the 2025 integration deal that would fold SDF fighters into the national army and transfer public services to federal authority. The Syrian Petroleum Company says it will rehabilitate al‑Omar, once producing 50,000 barrels a day.
Control of key dams and infrastructure—from Tabqa to Tishin—signals a decisive push by the government to reassert centralized power over territory long held by the SDF.
