The move follows the ambush shooting of two National Guard members near the White House. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was killed, while Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains in critical condition. The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome, was shot and arrested during the attack. Homeland Security officials said his asylum case was approved earlier this year under a court settlement that expedited Afghan applications.

Immigration processing for Afghan nationals has since been paused. President Trump condemned the attack as terrorism, vowing to reexamine refugee and asylum cases admitted under Biden‑era policies, underscoring heightened scrutiny of immigration amid national security concerns.
