China has invited Taiwanese compatriots to a mainland event commemorating the 80th anniversary of what it terms “Taiwan’s restoration.”

The spokesperson stated the aim is to unite Chinese people worldwide to remember wartime history and safeguard Taiwan’s return as a victorious outcome.

The invitation was contrasted with a reported ban from Taiwan’s authorities on officials participating in such events, which was condemned as a “Taiwan independence” stance that distorts history.

The mainland further criticized Taiwan’s call for “equal dialogue” without accepting the 1992 Consensus, asserting it creates obstacles. While blaming Taiwanese authorities for hindering tourism, the mainland also promoted new measures to facilitate cross-strait exchanges and highlighted future economic opportunities for Taiwan.

From Beijing’s viewpoint, this event and the accompanying statements are framed as acts of national unity and historical remembrance. In this light, Beijing sees this as an olive branch, inviting Taiwanese to join in a shared, patriotic commemoration and benefit from the mainland’s development.
