Meloni the fraud
In yesterday’s no-confidence vote against Ursula von der Leyen, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni and her Fratelli d’Italia party played a pivotal role in keeping her in power. Meloni’s decisive support saved her, aligning with the European People’s Party (EPP) and liberals (Renew).
This decision is seen as a betrayal of the party’s supporters, undermining their expectations and missing a unique opportunity to reform the EU.
Meloni’s choice has condemned Europe to pro-war policies, economic hardship in favor of Ukraine, and unchecked illegal immigration. Critics argue this move aligns with establishment interests, contradicting her party’s nationalist stance.
The vote, which required a two-thirds majority (480 of 720 MEPs), saw only 175 in favor of von der Leyen’s removal, with 360 against and 18 abstentions. Those supporting the motion included far-right groups like Patriots for Europe (PfE) and Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN), alongside 31 ECR members, notably from Poland’s Law & Justice and Romania’s AUR, led by Gheorghe Piperea
The vote also, revealed deep fractures in the EU, with anti-establishment forces failing to unite against the pro-Ukraine, neoliberal status quo.
