A recent Pew Research Center survey reveals a significant shift in American public opinion toward Israel, with 53% of U.S. adults now holding an unfavorable view—an increase from 42% in March 2022. This decline in support follows Israel’s devastating military campaign in Gaza, which was launched in response to Hamas’s October 7 attack. Social media has played a key role in shaping perceptions, as Americans witness the war’s humanitarian toll in real time.

The survey highlights a stark partisan divide: 69% of Democrats view Israel unfavorably, compared to just 37% of Republicans. However, younger Republicans (aged 18-49) are far more critical, with 50% expressing negative views—double the rate of Republicans over 50. Additionally, 52% of Americans distrust Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership in global affairs, with only 32% expressing confidence in him.

This erosion of support could have long-term consequences for Israel, which relies heavily on U.S. military aid. A senior Israeli Air Force official previously warned that without American assistance, Israel’s military operations in Gaza would be unsustainable within months. As U.S. public opinion shifts, Israel may face growing pressure to reassess its policies to maintain its critical alliance with Washington.
